Drag It Up! - Week 1

Drag it Up is a performance workshop led by multi-award nominated theatre artist and drag king Laura Wyatt O’Keeffe aka Father JC. 

Over the course of six weeks, this workshop explores drag and performance through comedy, character development, lip-sync, improvisation and storytelling.  We also discuss the basics of ascetics (make-up and costume) as well as audio track making.

No experience of drag, writing or performance necessary. 

This workshop is for you if:

- After this year's Pride, you were inspired to try something new. 

- You've want to perform drag but don't know where to start

- You don't want to perform drag but are curious about the art form & what it can offer

- You are an artist & what to add to your process/practice

- You enjoy being creative

- You want to meet new people in a fun learning environment

- You love hanging out at CAMP!

Course Content:

Week 1 - Intro to Drag & Performance

Week 2 - Character Development (What kind of king, queen, thing are you?)

Week 3 - Storytelling & Form (Do you want to use stand up, movement, create your own tracks etc?)

Week 4 - Improvisation, Audience Participation & Hosting 

Week 5 - Aesthetics (Make Up & Costume)

Week 6 - Final Act (Bringing everything we've learnt together)

 

About the Artist

Laura Wyatt O’Keeffe is a queer, Irish multi-award nominated performer, writer and theatre maker. Laura’s performance and participatory projects have toured to festivals and arts centres throughout the UK and Europe. Laura’s work explores gender politics, labels and rebels. She has facilitated workshops and  arts programs at the Barbican Arts Centre, Marlowe Theatre, National Centre for Circus Arts, LAMDA, University College of Cork and the University of Malta. Laura has a Masters in Performance from East 15 School of Acting, a Bachelor’s Degree in Drama and Theatre Studies with Sociology and English and a teaching diploma in Drama and Communication from University of West London. 

Her drag alter-ego, Father JC has graced the stages at Soho Theatre, Roundhouse and the Clapham Grand, even performed the sacred rituals at All Together Now Festival, Latitude, Mighty Hoopla and Margate Pride. This workshop was developed with support by Arts Council England.
